Is it that you're not getting cell service w/ your 4S at home where your HTC would? If that's the case... different cell phones receive cell signal differently. Did you by chance change carriers when switching from the HTC to the 4S?

Might need a cell booster... cell reception is going to vary from phone to phone really.

If you have wireless internet, have you tried connecting to it?

My iPhones 4 and 4S cell reception is inferior to even my 4 year old Motorola Razr. All 3 use the same carrier. Lay all 3 phones together anywhere, the Motorola wins in reception. The iPhones cost 4 times what I paid for the Razr. What's up, Apple?

I feel your pain. Had a similar problem and returned the AT&T 4s. Try another carrier after you check their coverage map. But beware, just because it looks good on their map doesn't mean you will have service in your home.
