AppleInsider reports today that Apple is planning to upgrade the forthcoming iPhone 6s front-facing “selfie” camera, complete with 1080p recording and a built-in flash.

The details were discovered by developer Hamza Sood, who discovered in the first iOS 9 beta a manifest file that lists how apps can recognise the hardware capabilities of the device that they are running on. This list includes several entries that refer to front-facing camera features that are not present on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, such as 1080p recording and a front flash, as well as “Front60FPSVideo,” “FrontSlomo,” and “FrontPanorama.”

The front-facing camera on the iPhone 6 captures video at 720p and 30 FPS, and is unable to take panoramic photos or slow-motion video.

This is the first rumour that has appeared about Apple upgrading the front-facing camera, which it refers to officially as the “FaceTime HD” camera, although there have been several recent rumours about upgrades to the rear iSight camera. When you think about how popular the whole selfie phenomena is, it makes total sense that Apple would want to give selfie-takers the best camera possible.
