My wife's iphone 5s notification sound of new text arrival has quit working. Any suggestions to fix the problem?

Have her go to Settings>Sounds>Text Tone and make sure her desired tone is selected, just in case the setting was accidentally moved to None.

Thanks. Text tone is still set. Sometimes it works and most times it doesn't.

Make sure she didn't enable Do Not Disturb for one of her contacts.
