I'm really confused right now. I've read some threads about creating backups of text messages but I'm still confused. I'm planning to upgrade my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1 "to fix the battery issue" (I hope it really fixes it) but I don't want my messages to be deleted. I'm planning to update, not to restore so does that mean that when I perform the update, I will not lose my messages and other stuff if I create a backup in iTunes? :)

Also, about the battery fix, what should I do, should I restore my iPhone 4S? or just do an update then do the reset all settings thing?

I'm using this thread as my guide: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3484755?start=0&tstart=0

In regards to saving your messages and other data... as long as you have performed a backup via iTunes before you restore or update they will not be lost.

As far as 5.0.1 "fixing" the battery issue. This has been beat to death here... w/ some saying it improved thier life dramatically, others saying it did nothing, and the remaining saying it made it worse. So, the choice lies w/ you my friend as far as updating to 5.0.1 goes.

If you decide to proceed w/ the update... be sure to perform the backup FIRST. Then update the phone as a "New Device"... then restore from your backup. This method seems to work best from what others have experienced.

How can I know if it improved my battery life? Any specific observations I should make? (Sorry. This is my first iPhone. Haha.)

No need to be sorry. However, I'm not going to drag this on into another "Battery Gate" thread. You'll know if it's doing well just the same as if you know it's not doing well after the update.
