imessage is NOT free. imessage uses your data plan instead of your message plan. It only works to other iPhones.

iMessage does not use data plan. Otherwise it would not work across the board with all iphone/ipad/itouch users. Its free given you have ios 5 and apple products such as above.

I believe its sent through data, hence why itouch/ipad users can send them as long as they have a wifi connection...
