i need help with iphone 3gs

hi, i am new here and i am wondering if anyone can help me with my iphone 3gs problem. lately for the last couple months i have been charged for data usage. i dont have a data plan and for some reason my phone uses data even when i am not using it. i have a 3gs 3.1.2. is there a way to disable this EDGE?

If you have an iPhone you have to have the data no matter what or you can go to setting and turn off you data
