How to backup your iPhone without iTunes?

I don't use iTunes and I wanted to find out how to backup my iPhone without it. I want to download the new IOS 7 in the next few days, but it was advised to backup one's iPhone first, which I haven't done since I abandoned iTunes.

Backup to iCloud assuming you have enough space on iCloud or bought an expansion. Or you can use an iTunes based utility to backup your device like iExplorer.

I updated to the iOS7 on my iPhone 4S without backing up my iPhone. However, I have my iPhone set to use iCloud whenever the phone is plugged in and connected to WiFi, which it always is when charging. Therefore, is the phone automatically backed up, everytime it's on iCloud? Is it necessary to back up to iTunes if it is in the Cloud?

Note that I have not backed up to iTunes but once since changing over from a 4 to a 4S in June this year. Do I need to?

If you use iCloud, you do not have to use iTunes for backing up.

Thanks. That's good to know because my wife and I each have iPhones and iPads and we don't use iTunes but all of our devices are set to use the cloud.
