Help jailbreaking a complicated phone.

Help! My friend asked me for a favour!
To help him jailbreak his iPhone 3GS.
I checked and he is still at version 3.1.3.
Problem now is. Which is the best solution to jailbreak his phone?
Is jailbreakme.com still usable?
Or should I update to 4.1 and use greenpois0n?
I read up about limerain and it said something about bootrom.
I don't understand anything about bootrom!
New? Old? How to check?
I'm sorry if this is reposting but the search function is screwed up on my ip4.

i would use this site iClarified - Tutorials - iPhone select the one you want, it has tutorials on how to jailbreak with different phones and different tools like greenpoison mac/windows and the other tools out there.
