This appeared on tbe bottom left of my keyboard today whilst texting a friend, the normal smiley face had been replaced by this! What is going on?

Looks like a glitch. Try going to settings>General >Keyboard and delete the Emoji keyboard. Hard reset (reboot) your device, then add the Emoji keyboard back.
