You need to DFU restore to 5.1.1.

Not 5.0.1, I mean ya can...but it sucks. That iOS version is laggy. Battery isn't good at all.

5.1.1 is awesome (aside from the stupid lock screen camera). But I use the magic within Cydia to bring back the original lock screen.

Are you wanting to jailbreak after updating?

You cannot update, and keep the jailbreak. Updating will unjailbreak it.

Either way, this is how you must update:

Download the 5.1.1 iPSW file for your *device model* here: http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=firmware save it to your desktop.

Before doing anything...you should transfer data to computer (since you won't be restoring from a backup...you can if you want...but...I don't recommend it. This is important because your latest backup is from a jailbroken device..not good. You have been warned).

Plug in iPhone, open iTunes.
Right click on devices name,
Click "Transfer Purchases".

Now *shut down device* and enter DFU mode.

Hold down the shift key on your keyboard..and simultaneously click the "Restore" button.

Locaete and double click on the 5.1.1 iPSW.

Let iTunes do the rest.

Once restore is complete, *setup as new*. NOT from backup.

Jailbreaking is a whole process on its own..and should be domes directly after initial on screen setup.

What will damage the mobile? I'm confused..

How could your device possibly get damaged?

Because they if u jailbreak it you will not able to update the mobile version

you are incorrect. the way zig is telling you IS correct. you must restore to 5.1.1. then rejailbreak (if you want to)

Um....I'm not totally sure what your saying.

If you jailbreak...you can upgrade your iOS...but you have to do it through iTunes...OTA updates won't work.

And besides....iOS 5.1.1 is the *latest* version of iOS software.

You can "always" upgrade your mobile OS version no matter what...you'll just lose the jailbreak.

But since the latest mobile version(iOS) is 5.1.1...and there is an untethers jailbreak for it....I don't see how that is an issue.

Nothing, including Jailbreaking, can stop you from upgrading your iOS version.

You heard wrong.
