Apple has given its iMac lineup a big update, announcing the changes at yesterday’s WWDC17 Keynote address.
“With major updates to iMac, and a refresh of our MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, the Mac is stronger than ever,” said John Ternus, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering. “Today iMac gets a huge graphics performance increase, faster CPU performance, Thunderbolt 3 and a brighter Retina display with support for 1 billion colors. We’re also increasing CPU and SSD speed on MacBook, adding faster processors and making faster graphics standard on our 15-inch MacBook Pro and introducing a new $1,299 (US) 13-inch MacBook Pro.”
Kicking off with the iMac lineup, the updated models now have faster Kaby Lake processors up to 4.2 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.5 GHz, and can support up to twice the memory as the last lineup. Fusion Drive now comes as standard on all 27-inch models and the top-of-the-line 21.5-inch iMac. The SSD storage is now up to 50% faster. The gorgeous iMac display has always been a big selling point , and these are all now 43% brighter at 500 nits and supporting 1 billion colours.
Next we have MacBook and MacBook Pro, with the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro now boasting Kaby Lake processors up to 3.5 GHz i7 with Turbo Boost up to 4.0 GHz, and the 15-inch MacBook Pro up to 3.1 GHz Core i7 with Turbo Boost up to 4.1 GHz. The 15-inch MacBook Pro now has more powerful discrete graphics with more video memory as standard, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro also has a new $1,299 configuration available.
And finally for the MacBooks, the popular 13-inch MacBook Air now has a 1.8 GHz processor.
All the above-mentioned are available to pre-order now and will be available to buy in Apple Stores from Wednesday June 7.
Apple also announced the next version of macOS, High Sierra, at WWDC17 yesterday. Features include new core storage, a new file system, High-Efficiency Video Coding support, and a big update to Apple’s advanced graphics technology, Metal. Other daily-use apps such as Photos, Safari, and Mail have also been improved in the update.
