According to a report on AppleInsider, Apple is planning to add a new partner to its supply chain specifically to manufacture the new 4-inch iPhone. In the original report in DigiTimes, supply chain sources said that Wistron is to join Apple’s supply chain, along with regular manufacturing partner Foxconn.

The source of the DigiTimes story says that Apple has decided to add another manufacturing partner in order to “avoid risks.” However, it is expected that Foxconn will still handle the lion’s share of the 4-inch iPhone orders, with Wistron only getting a “small portion” of the orders.

The sources also say that if Wistron plays its cards right then it could well become a regular manufacturing partner for Apple, and the company could even be contracted to assemble Apple’s forthcoming 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus, alongside Foxconn. It’s thought that Foxconn and Pegatron are Apple’s preferred companies to manufacture the 4.7-inch iPhone 7.
