Apple Investing $2 Billion Into Failed GTAT Plant

Back in October we saw that GT Advanced Technologies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Today Apple announced that it would be investing $2 billion over the next 30 years into the failed plant facility.

“We’re proud to continue investing in the U.S. with a new data center in Arizona, which will serve as a command center for our global networks,” Kristin Huguet, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, wrote in an e-mailed statement on Monday. “This multibillion-dollar project is one of the largest investments we’ve ever made.”

Our favorite fruit company plans to convert the sapphire plant, located in Mesa, Arizona, into a data center. The conversion will create between 300 to 500 construction jobs and staff 150 full-time employees when completed.

Apple plans to focus on job preservation as it makes "one of the largest investments" ever. The company also plans to cover over 1.3 million square feet with solar panels to power the location.
