Last week IDC announced that Apple now has 5% of the total worldwide mobile phone market. Now today IDC has even better news as far as Apple is concerned, with the release of its worldwide smartphone shipment survey. The latest figures reveal that Apple is just 6 percentage points away from toppling Nokia from its lofty perch as the world’s number one smartphone vendor, with 18.7% of the market for Q1, closing in on Nokia’s 24.2%, marking a unit sale increase of 114% year-over-year for Apple, with Nokia’s market share only rising by 12.6% in contrast. IDC says that Apple recorded triple-digit-growth in two key markets: the U.S., thanks to the Verizon iPhone 4, and also in Greater China.

As far as the overall worldwide smartphone market is concerned, sales increased by almost 80% year-over-year, with Android-based smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC combining with Apple in helping to grow the market, whereas Nokia and RIM slowed it down with their more disappointing figures.
