Apple asking Samsung to reduce OLED display prices.JPG

MacRumors reports today on a new story from Digitimes that says that Apple is insisting that Samsung lowers its pricing for the OLED displays that Apple will be ordering for forthcoming iPhone X models.

According to the sources of the Digitimes report, Apple has asked Samsung to reduce its prices to $100 per panel, which would be a drop of approximately 9.1% from the $110 that IHS Markit reported that Apple paid for the panels last year.

The Digitimes report is a little confusing as it says both that Apple is negotiating with Samsung to lower its prices, but also elsewhere in the report says that Apple is requiring that Samsung lowers its prices, which sounds a little more definite, and almost as if Apple is forcing Samsung to drop its prices for its OLED panels.

If this is accurate, it would suggest that Apple is not expecting to have any problem sourcing OLED panels from LG Display for this year’s iPhone line-up, as it’s unlikely that Apple would risk upsetting Samsung if it was reliant on it as a sole supplier. This therefore calls into question another recent report that said that LG Display was having production issues and would have to delay production of OLED panels for Apple.
