MacRumors reports that Samsung Display is about to sign an agreement with Apple to supply flexible OLED displays for forthcoming iPhones. In order to fulfil this contract, Samsung is expected to invest up to $7.47 billion in OLED manufacturing equipment.

According to the original source of the story, Korea’s ET News, once the new agreement with Apple is completed, Samsung will look to increase OLED display production by 30,000, up to 45,000 panels per month in 2016. An extra 45,000 will then be produced each month in 2017, according to what is said to be the terms of the new contract between the two companies.

The source adds that the OLED manufacturing and inspection equipment will be provided by South Korean companies AP Systems and HB Technology.

This latest report very much ties in with recent rumours that Apple is to launch an iPhone line-up with OLED displays from 2018 onwards, with Samsung Display previously being named as one of the companies expected to supply those displays. Other companies that Apple is also rumoured to have approached to provide the OLED panels include AU Optronics, LG, and Japan Display.
