I did all that, and next to Applications is the number 56. But there is no response when I depress or try to access those 56 applications?

The response would be a list of the apps that were not 64 bit compatible. Tapping on an app in the list will take you to the listing in the App Store or tell you that the app is no longer in the App Store.

Maybe the difference is that 56 is the number of apps you've installed yourself and the larger number includes the pre-installed apps.
