Any hacks to limit data usage on iDevices

Is it true that apple devices consume only fewer data compared to other devices? I was searching for methods to limit my data usage and went through an interesting article It points that iDevices (iPhones, iPods, and iPads) tend to have a much lower data usage footprint than standard laptops EDITED - no links.
I am usig a VPN on my android device to limit data usage. EDITED - no links Please suggest me a good app to control my network traffic.
