Classic video game fans may well remember the name Jon Hare, of Sensible Software famous for Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder, or the Bitmap Brothers, who were behind such classic games as The Chaos Engine and Speedball. Well Jon Hare and two leading lights of the Bitmap Brothers, Mike Montgomery and John Phillips, have got together to form Tower Studios, whose first iPhone game, Shoot to Kill, was released this summer. Developed by Vivid Games, Shoot to Kill has a very top-down-killing-spree Chaos Engine feel to it, and has been very well received by the critics. The iPhone game has just received an update, called “Addictive As Hell”, as well as a new Free version.

The iPhone and iPod touch versions of the game feature multiplayer mode, Full Escape from Hell Campaign, enhanced Retina Display visuals for the iPhone 4, 4 survival games, 14 different demons, 5 weapons including assault rifle, grenade launcher, lightning bolt, energy leech and chainsaw, as well as 13 Game Center-compatible achievements.

It’s a good idea to try before you buy with this one, as the fact that the main character just stands there and shoots might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but once you start playing it’s actually extremely addictive (as hell, indeed!) and very hard to put down, as you take on wave after wave of demons. And in a way it’s very freeing not to have to worry about moving around, you can just concentrate on honing your shooting skills during the increasingly frantic action. Good stuff.

You can download the full paid version here for $0.99, and the free version here.
