Aargh! App ads are waking me at all hours of the night!

Several times a day now I'm suddenly being attacked by updates/ads from my apps. I don't know what's changed recently, because it didn't used to be this bad, but it's gotten out of control. Since I keep my iPhone by my bed at night (due to sick relatives) and I need to hear it ring if need be, I'm constantly being awakened by these *dings!* when a new "message" or update arrives from ABC News or Angry Birds or Where's My Water? game, etc, etc.

I went into Settings > Notifications > Notification Center and de-selected every non-essential app to notify me, but it made no difference. Virtually everything is in the "Not In Notification Center" category now, and the ones that harrass me are in that de-seleted category, so I guess this isn't where I address the issue.

Any suggestions? I'm partially bald from pulling my hair out all the time.

Tap on each app individually in the Notification Center section of Settings as you've done before, and make sure that the pop up is set to <None> instead of Banner and that it's toggled to <No> for 'Show on Lock Screen".
