WhatsApp, the very popular iPhone messenger app that has been reigning supreme at the top of the paid app charts, looks set to become subscription-based, according to a report on AppleInsider today. At present, the WhatsApp messaging service is available for free once you’ve paid the initial purchase price for the app, but according to WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum, who was speaking to TechCrunch, by the end of the year the app will be free to download and use for the first year, but after the first year, subscribers will then have to pay an annual fee. However, don’t panic or worry that using your favourite app might suddenly be out of your price range, as AppleInsider notes that while WhatsApp has yet to announce how much the annual fee will be, it will most likely be along the lines of the company’s other apps, which have a recurring subscription fee of just $1 per year.

$1 a year, seems fair. Considering it's a $0.99 app, a decade of using it will ring you $11
