Using an iPhone as an iPod

My son wants an iPod Touch which led me to search for used iPods on eBay. I noticed that used iPhones (2g and 3g) were similar in price to a used iPod. The advantage to the iPhone is that it appears to do all the things an iPod can PLUS take pictures and video. My question is can the iPhone be used without the cell phone being activated. I don’t need another cell phone plan.

The ipod 4th gen takes photo's and video's so why not just go with one of them? You'll find that the graphics on a 4th gen with will a 100 times better than on a 2g or 3g iphone.
To answer your question though, yes they can be used with out a sim card or an active sim card.

Thank you for the answer. I was considereing the used iPhone 3g becuase it is about $40 less than the used iPod 4th gen on eBay. But if the graphics are that much better I may take a closer look at the iPod 4th gen. Thanks again.
