update problem

I have an iphone 3 and am busy updating the software but there is no pogress bar to tell me how far along it is , how do I check on this to see that it hasn't frozen or something , im using a slow wifi so it might just be taking a long time to update the software im not sure though , any help would be greatly appreciated

Use iTunes to restore.

I tried that already but my computer doesn't even recognise that the phone is there anymore so there is no way I can restore or backup from iTunes , trying now to run battery completely flat hoping it will reboot or something ,really getting irritated now with it ,is there a reset or anything else I could try ?

Put the device into DFU mode, and wait for your computer to install the DFU driver. Once your computer recognizes your device in DFU mode (iTunes will say Recovery), do a hard reset so that your device is turned on. iTunes should recognize your device now. If not, uninstall iTunes and your USB driver, restart your computer, then reinstall iTunes
