turning off apps

Traded my 7 for XR .How do you turn off apps on it?. On the 7 you tapped home twice.

Swipe up and to the right and all the apps will appear. Hold one for a second or so and they will all develop a red circle with a minus sign on it on the upper left corner. Now just swipe each app you want to close up and they will be closed
