Just introducing myself I have been jailbreaking and unlocking iPhones for 2 years now for money on my local craigslist and i have been making tons of money(hate to brag but its cool). I know loads about iPhone and do repair now too.
I can recognize any iPhone problem so if you have some questions ask away sometimes ill even make a video just to show how to unlock/jailbreak correctly or fix a specific problem.

@flori To unlock an iPhone 4 you first need to know the software version. Go to the settings app then tap general then tap about and under the title version there should be a number like 4.0 or 4.3.3 etc.
Once you know which software you have you have two choices, if the software is lower than 4.0.2 you can unlock the phone using jailbreak tool limera1n then installing ultrasn0w in cydia. The other choice if you have newer software(past 4.0.2) is a "turbo sim" which can be bought on ebay or amazon, they are called gevey sim. The gevey sim comes with an instruction packet on ow to install.

@Mysterion Error 3194 comes about when you try to downgrade your iPhones software, apple does not want you to do this so they block software downgrades. If you want to downgrade your software in the future you will need to jailbreak your iPhone and in cydia press on the tab that have a red heart on it and says make my life easier. Doing that will save your SHSH blobs and enable you to, once apple updates the software downgrade your software to the software that you have saved SHSH blobs for.
