Polygon writes that Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka has revealed in Famitsu that the next Sonic the Hedgehog game from the team will be an endless runner called Sonic Runners.
The side-scrolling 2D game is described in Famitsu as one that can be played with one hand, with Sonic moving ahead automatically and players simply needing to tap the screen to make him jump to avoid obstacles.
Many familiar and beloved elements of the Sonic universe will be included, such as collecting rings, stages featuring massive loops, Dr. Robotnik boss battles. There’s even an opportunity to unlock Sonic’s friends Tails and Knuckles.
Of course, Sonic Runners is only the very latest in a long and distinguished list of side-scrolling 2D Sonic games, and the new trailer makes the most of this, featuring many of Sonic’s side-scrolling acrobatics over the years, right back to the Sega Genesis games and more up-to-date with Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2.
The game will be free to download, and is expected to launch in Japan this month, and hopefully not long after in the rest of the world.
