I'm having the same problem with trying to update to the beta 6 or 7 I got to the restore part and it didn't work I'll try again but what did u do to get it to work for you and I'm doing it on an ipad

If you haven't download ireb from the makers of sn0wbreezr. Put your phone into dfu then run that and then try restoring again

Ok cool. That's my problem then. Thanks for the help. They will be compatible when it's publicly released right?

When iOS5 is released you can "update" from iOS4 to keep your data, but no, iOS4 backups will never be compatible for restoring on iOS5.
