Siri not working

Is anyone having a problem using Siri without the headset? If I speak directly into the phone's speaker it has a problem with connecting. It only works with the supplied headset.

Siri has to have a good 3g data connection ... and I mean good I have 3 bars on my phone at work which my evo used to only have 2 and almost always could not receive calls here. Needless to say Siri can not connect to the network here if I go outside the building it is spotty.
