They're not common, most of them were developed last year. Maybe they'll be cheaper with time, as more people know they exist and use them.

Use software like iExplorer to save the photos to your PC.

Just a quick update on this. I solved the problem by downloading a little program called Appandora. Really good program, simple to use and best of all free. I would reccommend this program to anyone wanting to transfer files between Apple devices and PC's. Thanks for all the suggestions along the way.
