Planning on only buying a tether app and 3g unrestrictor from Cydia. Being jailbroken am I setting myself up for more headache than my 2 interests are worth? For example Safety of my personal info , Reboots , battery , instability, etc? Paid 7 bills for this phone and don't want to bring on more issues for a couple of bells and whistles. Thx

There shouldn't be problems. As long as you maintain your jailbreak. With respect to battery draining, more or less your battery will drain a little faster while tethering, which is the case for all devices pretty much. As for personal information, Malware and Spyware are VERY rare. There're so many different sublevels for the iOS with their sandboxes, so if they're targeting your phone directly, they have to try really hard to do it, or they'll have to physically have your device to bug it

As per tethering, make sure that you choose a tethering app that spoofs data usage properly if you don't want to pay for the monthly tethering fee. In some cases, if you call up a rep from your carrier and they see that your data pool is large enough and they're having a good day, they'll open up the tethering port for you and void the monthly payment

Cool. Thx. What tethering app so you recommend and I don't understand opening the tethering port? I would be grateful for a brief explanation and will it raise any eyebrows calling verizon for that? Thx again

If you're on iOS 6, you'll see that iOS by default has a personal hotspot feature in Settings. Normally, you'd have to pay a monthly fee to allow you to tether, so it's like "opening a port" or opening a gate that allows you to use your data to tether "legitimately". But since it costs an additional 10-20$ or more depending on carrier, users opt to use a tethering app from Cydia that'll spoof your data usage so that it doesn't appear as tethering data, but rather have it come up as using data regularly i.e. it'll seem like just used 2GB of data streaming movies and stuff, rather than having it show up as you using the data through tethering your phone. If you grandfathered an unlimited data plan from the Jurassic Age, most reps will just open up the feature to you without the data cost. I've heard of cases where there's a 6GB allowance, and my colleague didn't have to pay the monthly fee.

Ok. How would you position it to rep to get them to open tethering?

I've personally never talked to a rep about it since I'm on a corporate unlimited plan with a tethering plan paid by the company to tether my devices, but I would say call up VZW, bring up tethering and ask lengthy questions and at the end bring up about whether or not it'll be available free on your plan with your data plan and such. It may take a few reps to get it done since some reps go straight by the books, others have their own ethics. But obviously if you're rolling with a 1-2GB or so data allowance, they'll push for the tethering. If you have a larger data pool like 6-8GB+, they'll most likely not push for it if you get the right rep.

Thanks Willer. I did some research and it appears if you are going to jailbreak you have to be ready and willing to troubleshoot issues. Stability is important and I'm hoping by just installing 3G unrestrictor and a tethering app only I will still maintain stability as If I werent jjailbroken. Is this accurate?

Well maintaining a jailbreak isn't difficult per say, but you just have to do a bit of Spring cleaning every few weeks. Or in your case, if you're strictly tethering and using 3G unrestrictor, maybe once a season or something. Just make sure that you read before doing anything as that's the number 1 problem when it comes to jailbreaking for users. Before downloading ANYTHING from Cydia, install MobileSubstrate to allow you to go into Safe Mode in the occasion where something decides to go wrong.
