According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, via MacRumors, Apple is planning to restrict use of sapphire crystal displays to just the higher-end versions of the forthcoming 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone Air.

The WSJ says that due to the high cost of the sapphire crystal displays, Apple is also planning to charge more for these higher-end phones.

The WSJ’s sources say that choosing to only use the sapphire crystal displays in the higher-end versions of the phones is primarily due to restrictions in the supply of sapphire crystal for the displays.

Other recent rumours on the matter have said that Apple would only be using sapphire crystal displays in the 5.5-inch iPhone model (thought to be called the iPhone Air), so it’s interesting to see a fresh report saying that the smaller, 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will also have a sapphire crystal display, even if it is only the more expensive phones in the range.
