Same Person Said to be in Charge of Both Apple Maps and iOS 8.0.1

According to a report on AppleInsider today, it looks as though the Apple quality control manager who had responsibility for the Apple Maps epic fail is also responsible for the botched iOS 8.0.1 update launched this week.

The original report on Bloomberg says that according to insiders familiar with Apple’s corporate structure, the manager of the quality assurance teams in question heads up a worldwide team of over 100 employees who are supposed to find and fix problems with iOS software in the pre-launch testing stage.

Apparently Apple prefers to use humans to do this job, rather than automated methods, but maybe the company will be changing that approach from now on.

The same sources also reckon that Apple’s extra-robust security could be responsible for not picking up the issues with iOS 8.0.1 in time; it seems that Apple CEO Tim Cook only grants senior managers access to unreleased iPhone handsets, making testing of the new software on the phones for which it is actually intended rather more difficult than testing on models that are already on the market.

AppleInsider says that following the well-documented problems with Apple’s fledgling Maps app two years ago, the manager in question was removed from their post, but remained in charge of iOS testing.
