safari downloads stopping when switching apps?

I have noticed that if I initiate a download in Safari, and then switch to another app, the download stops. Then when I go back I need to start over.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Or is there another app/browser that it is recommended for more reliable and efficient downloading?

You‘ll get the same behaviour with other browsers as well, afaik.
When you switch to another app, the app you‘ve used so far “freezes”, thus freeing up the RAM they were using.
Apps are not running in the background on iDevices. There is no way to prevent this from happening. Keep the app open to continue and finish downloading, and switch to another app afterwards,
