According to a new report in The Korea Economic Daily, via iDownload Blog, Apple is working with LG Innotek on developing a new “3D photographing” feature for the iPhone 7 Plus depth-of-field Portrait mode. It’s likely that if this collaboration proves to be fruitful, some, or maybe all, of the 2017 iPhone line up will have dual cameras with 3D photography features.

LG Innotek is currently the exclusive supplier of the dual cameras for the iPhone 7 Plus, and has already had success in this new field, providing its 3D camera technology for the 2011 Optimus 3D phone. Apple also has access to its own 3D camera technology, having acquired Israeli firm LinX Imaging for $20 million in April 2015. It’s thought that LinX technology is responsible for the iPhone 7 Plus dual camera features, and Apple most likely used much of Linx’s technology in developing the iPhone 7 Plus Portrait mode in particular.
