Remove the "+" sign from a message contact

I hope my title is correct.... I accidently touched the blank area beside a iMessage contact name and have since had a "+" sign to appear on all my messages 'to" names. I have went into settings and turned off group messaging but the "+" sign still appears when I type a name. Is there any way to get this from appearing every time I type a name into the iMessage field? If there is..I can't find it. Thanks

Is this happening when composing a new message? I have a "+" sign as well. But if you tap it it brings up your contacts to choose recipients.

It's meant so you can add another contact. It wont hurt anything. Just don't click it if you don't want to add another contact
