Probably dumb contacts question

OK, I create a contact on my phone. I look for it in my gmail contacts later, and it isn't there ... yet it remains on the phone.

If, however, I create a contact in my gmail contacts list, it appears on the iPhone.

I have "push" activated.

Am I doing something wrong ... or does the phone not push contacts elsewhere?

I think I have it: I should set default account to gmail.

Make sure you turn off contacts for any other accounts as well, i.e. iCloud, yahoo, leaving just the gmail account turned on.
