According to a report on MacRumors today, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has announced that it will start to transition to iPhones for its 36,000 police officers this fall, just under a year since it finished rolling out Windows Phones to the officers, and 3 years since it made the original decision.

Jessica Tisch, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of Information & Technology, said, "Three years ago we made the decision to bring mobility to the NYPD. At that time, neither iOS nor Android phones allowed us to cost-effectively utilize prior investment in custom Windows applications."

She went on to say that “improvements in Apple controls” will help the department to “responsibly and cost-effectively move its mobility initiative to the Apple platform.” Tisch stated that the NYPD smartphone initiative is still 45% under budget, despite the change.

Tisch was actually making the announcement in response to a New York Post story published yesterday entitled “NYPD needs to replace 36K Useless Smartphones,” which directly criticised Tisch and talked about the NYPD’s decision to replace the old phones with iPhones by the end of the year.

“This Sunday, while a Post reporter was writing her story, NYPD officers used their smartphones to help respond to over 25,000 911 calls; ran 18,000 searches; and viewed 1,080 flyers of missing or wanted persons. Sunday is a slow day,” wrote Tisch at the beginning of her statement. She concluded the press release by saying, “…the smartphone program has made the NYPD, already New York’s Finest, even finer. Sure doesn’t sound like a ‘useless smartphone,’ does it?”
