I have collected a replacement phone today and restored via iTunes.

Only problem, I can't switch it off. If I hold the usual buttons, it reboots as the Off slide does not appear.

Replacement from Apple? So did you have the problem before the restore or did you get it after the restore.

If your holding the power button and the home button together with IOS6 you don't get the slide to power off anymore.

This is correct. When an iDevice is running 6.0 or higher the "slide to power off" doesn't come up during a Hard Reset. If you'd like to just turn your iDevice off... just hold the power button on top.

Not sure if the "buttons" part was intentional or not, since there's only 1 button really.

Buttons.

Apologies - senior moment! i had been without my iPhone while waiting for replacement and forgot I only needed to hard-press power button to see the slide and switch off!

I had got used to booting the old one, trying to find a solution to greyed-out Wifi button - it appears that the WiFi chip was faulty so the phone has been replaced.

Thanks for your replies anyway.
