No sound from Apps

On 3rd party apps that emit sounds e.g. audio reminder alerts, the sound is not heard. The app pop-ups work, my iphone alarm clock & timer work but my 3rd party Apps are in 'silent mode'.

Is it a setting needing adjustment, an IOS 12 issue or my phone is sick?

Take a look at the Mute switch (Ring/Silent switch) on your iPhone. If you see the coloured part (orange or red), your device is muted, and sound is turned off except for alarms or calls from your favourite contacts.
