new update and imessage

I'm sorry if someone has posted this inquiry before, I am new here so if someone could link me to the answer that'd be great!

I just updated my iPhone 3gs to the new iOS5 update (mainly for the imessage quirks- message delivered, read, and the typing dots) but I don't see them! All of my chat bubbles are still green and I've texted other users that do have imessage turned on (as is mine) and it still doesn't display these quirks! Could someone please help me enable this specification? Or tell me how I can or if I can't?

Do you have iMessage enabled? Setting>messages>iMessage on.

Yes, it is enabled....It has been. I have also restarted my phone thinking maybe that might have something to do with it. Still doesn't show the "read" message option or the "typing" dots....

Hmm. Interesting. Maybe the reciever has send read receipts off. That's all I could think of besides the other party not having iMessage on
