FYI 3G can be updated to 4.2.1. As Thomasjtsi indicated, 1015 is usually an error you receive when you have the iPad baseband installed and attempt to restore a factory firmware(1015 is a baseband panic). Shift+Restore a custom 4.2.1 firmware in pwned-DFU mode in order to update.

+1... just make sure you chose the "Preserve Baseband" option while creating the custom firmware.

Ok... there's your issue. You cannot update a 3G past iOS 4.1... as that's the highest iOS version it supports.
