New Mac User having issues transferring apps, music, etc. to Mac. : (

I recently got a new macbook air. I previously had a HP pavilion. All my music and apps are currently still on my old computer. When I sync my macbook air to my iPhone it says it is synced but no music or apps appear in my iTunes. What can I do to fix this?

One of the main reasons I need to now is because I need to back up my apps/music before I try and jailbreak my phone.
