Just got an iPhone 4

So I'm really new to it and just finding my way around.

I think I ran up a huge bill roaming in Japan! I couldn't resist using it.

Is there some way I can set it next time so I only receive emails and avoid downloading data?

you can turn off the data roaming or on? and fetch new data to off..etc

Many thanks. I had a quick look at 'settings' but couldn't see where.

You can just turn data and calls on or off. Not specific things.... Mail is data so you'd just havetoo not open other data apps when you checked the mail.
