Well Tammie, your jailbreak method depends on what iOS version you're running. It's under Settings > General Version. Let us know.

Hi Tammie... the only option for 5.0.1 is to jailbreak using redsn0w. Only drawback will be that it's a tethered Jailbreak.

Unless her 3GS has the old bootrom. Which Is pwned for life. Lol!

Ahh yes... another item in the list of many that I need to remember. When we say "old bootrom" is there a specific # or several?

They made a big difference adding that ".2" onto there didn't they. I take it you have to ssh in to find out what bootrom you're on?

This is how you do it with a Mac. I'll have to dig through my notes to find the PC instructions (or just google it.)

Step 1: Put your iPhone into DFU Mode (not recovery mode)

Connect your iPhone to your computer.
Turn iPhone off.
Start iTunes.
Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so.
Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device.
iTunes will now recognize your iPhone.
Note: Your iPhone screen at this time should be blank (black in color), if not, then you are most likely in Recovery Mode, not DFU mode.

Step 2: Run "System Profiler" and navigate to: Hardware -> USB (menu on left).

Step 3: At the top right under "USB Device Tree" panel click "Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)"

Step 4: Now down under in "Serial Number", simply go through the string and you'll find the bootrom version next to iBoot.
