Is there any way to find the owner of a locked iPad?

My neighbour has an iPad Mini that was left at his house and nobody knows who it belongs to and nobody has called looking for it. The iPad mini is locked with the usual owner's passcode so we can't just look inside to see who is in the contacts as "me". How can we find the owner? Could an Apple Store find the owner if we can't?

If it's a Wi-Fi + cellular iPad, you'll find the IMEI on the back of the device. Contact the carrier and use the IMEI to find out who it belongs to.

Anything for non cellular models?

If Siri is enabled, ask him/her: Who does this iPad belong to? or something similar, and the iPad will show the name of the owner on the lock screen.

You could always turn the iPad in to the proper authorities and let them find the owner. They have more available resources than you do to help in the search for the owner.

To end the suspense... the owner has been found. Not by any marvellous technical means but by spreading the word far and wide through likely friends until it caught the right person's ear. Home again after 3 months.
