This is what I did. I had an email account with a pop server. When the email provider decided that it would also allow imap accounts, I deleted the pop sever email account from the iPhone. Then, using the Exchange I downloaded the account and it walked me through choosing the imap setting instead of the pop server setting. But I would not have been able to do this if the email company had not added an imap server.
