please advise me as to the best way to backup my calendar and contacts

If you use iCloud for your contacts and calendars, they are not backed up, because they already are in the cloud. iCloud is syncing them, which means your events and contacts will be available on other devices as well.

If you want to backup contacts and calendars, use iTunes. Here's how it has to be done (select "Use iTunes"):
