Hi my iphone 4 has started to randomly switch itself off even when its got over 90% battery left and the only way it will start up is if I plug it into the charger even for a couple of seconds then it starts up straight away I can then unplug it and it will work for a few hours or so until it decides its had enough then switch's itself of again any ideas ?

Try plugging the device into your outlet and hard resetting it by pressing and holding both the power and home buttons together simultaneously and releasing both once you see the Apple logo. This should theoretically recalibrate your battery for your iOS and usually resolves early shut-down issues with batteries on iOS devices
