iphone 4 factory unlocking problem

i have an iphone 4..locked to at&t..I did an factory unlocking on ebay..the seller said me congratulations ur iphn has been unlocked...but when i connect it to itunes.. no such unlocking msgs comes in....i have os 5.1.1...is it necessary to update to ios 6 in order to activate my iphone????

In most cases you won't need to restore. Plug in a SIM card from a carrier that's not the original carrier for the iPhone and see if it works
