iphone 3g ios query.

New here and just been given an iphone 3g on ios4.2 eventually they trickle down to the needy lol. So he cleaned off everything including the Apps, so going to iTunes and trying to download Apps I get message saying I need ios4.3 which is obviously a bit of a problem. So does this mean the world has moved on without me or is there anyway I can still download Apps. Can't even get Facebook. Can the ios be upgraded?

The highest iOS supported on the 3G is 4.2.1.

Thank you. Would Jailbreaking let me load new Apps, or am I stuck with what I have?

Jailbreaking alone will not. However, there is a Jailbreak tweak that tricks iTunes apps into thinking you're on a higher iOS version. But..... it hasn't been updated in a long time. So, I'm not sure if it even supports newer updated apps.
